YIKES!
You have a date tonight, but you don't know how to do your hair. Girl, believe me I know the feels. But do not fear. I will guide you through a step-by-step process on how to create this fun and flirty braided bun.
I was inspired to create this updo from a pin I found on Pinterest. Here is the link to the original style if you would like to see it.
I always like to start my up-dos with dirty hair. I know that sounds strange, but believe me, DIRTY hair is so much easier to work with than clean hair. Let me clarify.. Dirty hair does not mean dirty-looking hair. I have found that dirty hair creates more volume! If your hair oils really fast like mine does, you can use dry shampoo. OR if you're a Do-It-Yourself-er like myself, then you can use baby powder or cornstarch. Here is a cool post about how to make your own tinted dry shampoo from baby powder.
Next, section the hair. If you look closely at the pictures, you'll notice that the braided section adds hair while wrapping all the way around the bun.
To section the hair use a comb, or your finger, and create a circular subsection around the crown of your head. (This is the general area where the bun is located in the pictures above). Secure that area with an elastic hair tie. Pony tail, or clip the remaining hair away from your face-however is convenient for you.
The next step is creating the bun. Divide the pony tail in to two sections. I would recommend buying some texturizing spray or powder. If you don't have any that's okay, you can use hairspray. Take the first section of hair from the pony tail and lightly spray with your texturizing spray. Divide that section into two. Twist those two sections together to make a unicorn braid. To do this, twist the section on the right to the right and then move it over top of the left section. Repeat this process all the way down.
Once you have made your unicorn braid, secure it with an elastic. lightly tug at the pieces of the braid to create more volume. I have found that repeatedly tugging gently at small pieces works much better than roughly tugging at larger ones. Create another unicorn braid with the other section of the pony tail.
So far you should have one pony tail at the crown of your head that is split in to two unicorn braids :)
If you have this then you can now form the bun. Take both unicorn braids and wrap them around each other however you would like, to create a full and fluffy bun. Secure with bobby pins as you go. There isn't really a set process in how to do this. Each time I make one it is different, so get creative ;)
Now you can create the braid. [I'm going to assume everyone knows how to do a french braid. If not, there are a TON of wonderful tutorials on youtube :) ] Begin the braid at the start of a deep side part from whatever side you usually part your hair. As you french braid, keep the braid close to the bun, and only grab sections of hair from your hairline (as opposed to near the bun). Continue the braid all the way around the head to where you started, then braid the hair all the way to the ends and secure with a clear elastic. Spray some more of the texturizing spray onto the braid and french braid. Lightly tug at the braid to make it appear more full. When you are happy with how the braid looks, wrap that around the bun. Finish by hiding the end of the braid inside the bun and securing with bobby pins.
There is enough texture spray and bobby pins in this hairstyle that your hair should stay nice and snug during the entire day!
